Dharma Jams
March: Being Body, Being Dance
This month we’ll delve below the surface of our active dancers to our receptive, listening cores, witnessing the body and allowing its impulses. A few words of introduction— drawn from current choreographer-philosophers as well as 15th century Japanese No Theater director Zeami— and a meditation will invite embodied arrival. Imagery will then be offered in a brief exercise to bridge sitting to standing, and then to free movement and dance.
Dharma Jams offer a forum to bring practice into motion. Jams begin with a brief Dharma talk and meditation on a theme. A light score is then presented to bridge the theme from seated reflection to contemplative movement and free-form dance through phases inspired by the Three Jewels of Buddha (awareness), Dharma (path), and Sangha (community). Most of this movement period is supported by a playlist of recorded music, with attention to fostering a sacred and celebratory soundscape.
