Mission
Moving Dharma strives to wed the moving body with the awakening mind by harnessing the potential of kinesthetic learning and embodied spirituality through the tools of creative movement structures, breakdancing fundamentals, improvisational dance, and small group choreography. Workshops and jams invite engagement. Performance encourages reflection.
Much of the work is an exploration of Buddhist wisdom. From impermanence amidst interdependence to compassion within emptiness, Moving Dharma takes the Dharma from the text and the cushion on to the dance floor. In group-specific trainings, movement engages insight into specific topics, from urban agriculture to African American history to corporate executive coaching.
Present through Moving Dharma's different offerings is the question of how Dharmic arts can be allies to the oppressed and not merely entertainment for the elite. This is a large question, which calls into focus how the demographics of Western Buddhism are shaped. One interim way of answering this question has been to donate funds raised by Moving Dharma events to a need-based youth scholarship for the Interfaith Youth Initiative, a week long spiritual and leadership development program. I am also beginning to adapt the Dharma Jam format as an offering in mental health and at-risk community settings.
